Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub are commonly defined by dry summertime and rainy wintertime, although in many areas rainfall occurs uniformly. Summers are usually hot in low-lying hinterland areas but can be cold near to cooler seas.

Mediterranean trees adjust themselves to dry summers with the help of their thick shells and wax-covered leaves which support them to decrease transpiration.  Also, Mediterranean plants have large taproots to enter the underground water, and often known as called "Xerophytic Plants".

Mediterranean regions are perceived as 'Orchards of the world' for their cultivation of fruits. Citrus fruits such as oranges, figs, olives, and grapes are generally grown here because people have dismissed the natural vegetation.
