Napoleon staged a coup in the year 1799 and laid the foundation of a totalitarian state with later declaring himself to be the emperor of France in the year 1804. He took the following steps to modernize France:-
1. He codified the French law popularly known as Napoleonic code which laid the administrative foundation of France.
2.He sought to modernize the army and prepared it conquer neigbouring European countries. He established control over the European continent through a series of military victories.
3. He introduced laws for the protection of private property and uniform system of weights and measures.
