Fundamentals are called so because they withstand the test of times. However, occasionally, fundamentals may get shrouded under perceptions and get delayed recognition. That is precisely what is happening with some locations and neighbourhoods in Mumbai, which for varied perceptions have been denied their true worth.Central suburbs in general and Chunabhatti- Priyadarshani Circle neighbourhood in particular is one such case.
The Priyadarshini Mattoo's case is an outstanding example of the importance of media's role in obtaining justice for common people. In this case, the convict Santosh Kumar, son of a police inspector, though found guilty of murdering the victim Priyadarshini, was earlier acquitted by the trial court in 1999. However strong public opinion & continuous pressure by the media forced a re-opening of the case. Eventually, on 17th October 2006, the Delhi High Court awarded him capital punishment.
