HIGHSCHOOL PHYSICAL SCIENCE! PLEASE HELP!
1. Both acids and bases produce ions when dissolved in water. Propose a way to describe what hydroxide ions (OH−) and H+ (hydrogen) ions are. What do they have to do with acids and bases and the pH scale?

2. Using what you know about acids, bases and pH, predict what will happen when an acid, such as vinegar, is mixed with water. How would mixing a base, such as baking soda, with water be different?

Answer:

1. When an acid is added to water the atoms of acid break to form an ion of hydrogen, this is the H+ ion same with bases but they disassociate to form   -OH- ions.

H+ ions decrease the pH of the solution while OH- ions increase the pH of the solution.

2.VInegar mixed with water will make the water a little bit more acidic as it becomes a solution of acetic acid and water. The pH will decrease meaning, the water becomes acidic, no effervescence is seen.

While when baking soda is mixed with water, the acid reacts with the base and the bicarbonate ion and hydrogen ion then breaks apart making Water and carbon di oxide.
