Answer:

23.5%

Step-by-step explanation:

Method 1:

Given two successive discounts are 10% and 15%.

After an initial discount of 10%, you have to pay 90% of the original price.

After a second discount of 15%, you have to pay 85% of 90% of original price

Now,

⇒ (85/100) * (90/100) * original price

⇒ 7650/10000

⇒ 765/1000

⇒ 76.5/100

⇒ 76.5%.

So,paying 76.5% of the original price implies a discount of (100 - 76.5) = 23.5%.

Therefore, discount = 23.5%.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Method - 2:

Let A = 10%, B = 15%.

Equivalent Discount = (A + B) - AB/100

                                 = (10 + 15) - (10 * 15)/100

                                 = (25) - 150/100

                                 = 25 - 1.5

                                 = 23.5.

Therefore, Equivalent discount = 23.5%

Hope it helps!

  • Successive Discount :

  →  1 ± D/100 = ( 1 ± d₁/100) ( 1 ± d₂/100 ) (1 ± d₃/100)......and so on.

So , here

 1 - D/100 = ( 1 - 10/100) ( 1 - 15/100)

⇒ 1 - D/100 = 90/100 × 85/100

⇒ (100 - D )/100 =  90/100 × 85/100

⇒ 100 - D = 76.5

∴ D = 100 - 76.5 = 23.5 %.

  • Single discount = 23.5 %.
