Ganga is a very big and sacred river of India. It originates at Gangotri, a big glacier in the Himalayan range and flows through plains, forests and terrain. There are several important and big cities on the banks of Ganga like Rishikesh, Hardwar, Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Patna etc. after flowing through hundreds of kilometers it reaches the sea.

Ganga is associated with several legends as a holy river. At different places, it is known by different names like Alaknanda, Patit Pawan, Bhagirathi, etc. in most of the Hindu rituals, “Gangajal” is used as sacred water. Previously, it was believed that Ganga water is never spoil. But now due to pollution even Ganga water got spoil.

Numerous industrial cities and areas have been developed by the side of river Ganga. All these manufacture various types of goods and services for the consumers and producers. Availability of water, transport and other facilities are the causes of development of these industries.

Now the Ganga water, due to many factor have become polluted and dirty. At places it has become unfit for human consumption. “Operation cleaning Ganga” is meant to purify water of Ganga. The ‘operation of cleaning Ganga’ is in the second phase and crores of rupees are being spent on it.

Previously Ganga was extensively used for navigation and hundreds of boats were used for transporting passengers and goods from one place to another. Now due to siltage and shallowing of the river heavy means of transport cannot be used to carry passengers and loads.

Ganga is the primary service of water for several canals in specific areas of the country. These irrigate thousands of acres of land and help in having good crops.

All the towns and cities that are by the side of Ganga get their drinking water from it. Fishermen catch fish in Ganga.
