Answer :-

Here we are in a situation where the particle is moving along the straight line with increasing speed.

Here we have to consider the word speed , it doesn't matter velocity is decreasing or increasing with the acceleration.

Like for example :-

A particle is moving with velocity = -15 m/s

A second particle is moving with a velocity = -10 m/s

Now we can clearly compare the velocities that the second particle have larger velocity.

but in the case of speed

First particle will have a speed of 15 m/s

Second one will have a speed of 10 m/s

So the speed of second particle is less.

Similarly if the speed is increasing the acceleration may be positive or maybe negative.

Here the word "may" means it is not necessary that it will be .

Hence the answer should be (2) cause it says the acceleration maybe negative.

The other option (1) and (3) says it should be positive or negative respectively.

Hence only option 2 is the answer.
