All larger vessels have the same general structure, which can vary depending on their location and function (i.e., from inside to outside). The histology of veins:

1. The tunica intima ( the ‘intima’ or ‘interna’)

2. The tunica media (the ‘media’ or ‘muscularis’)

3. The tunica externa adventitia (the ‘adventitia’)

And others given in the image below (figure b).

The veins still have the three basic layers (tunica adventitia, tunica media and tunica intima), but the elastic and muscular components are less prominent. The smooth muscle layers are used to contract or dilate the veins, to accommodate changes in blood volume.
