At the beginning of April, 1938, Ernest Hemingway returned to Spain for the 3rd time to cover the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance.

On Easter Sunday, April 17, as he was about to cross the Ebro river in search of the advancing Facist forces, Hemingway saw an old man sitting at the bridge at Ampota.

When he returned to the bridge, the man was still there. Hemingway stopped and talked briefly with him. Here are his set of note recording his impressions and his conversation with the old man.
