The united freedom struggle and other forms of literature played an essential role in unifying people of India beyond the barriers of caste,creed, gender etc.
1. Nationalism being an abstract idea, needed to be acknowledged by the people.To do so,nationalism in India was allegorised as Bharat Mata by Bankim Chandra in 1870.
2. Bankim Chandra even wrote the Vande Mataram hymn which was later added to his novel Anandmath. This hymn was a song sung to depict patriotism during nationalism struggle riots.
3.Bharat Mata was modified by Abanindranath Tagore into a ascetic woman who was pure and divine.
4. This enabled the Indians to associate with the abstract idea of nationalism.
5.Towards the late 19th century,Indian nationalists felt the need to collect essential folklores of various regions of India so as to revive the pride filled culture which had been destroyed by the British.
6.Rabindranath Tagore collected these valuable pieces in India and Natesa Sastri did the same in Tamil Nadu.He publishes the Tamil folklores as a collection names,The Folklores Of Southern India.
