They were enormous, at one point occupying a room's worth of space, and required a massive amount of power, about equivalent to that required by several hundred contemporary personal computers. The evolution of computer hardware is covered in the history of computing, starting with rudimentary calculators and moving on to mechanical calculators, punched card data processing, and finally, to contemporary stored program computers. Calculators are the mechanical tools that are used to assist in calculations, whereas computers are the machine operators.
