History of print media in India:

The first newspaper was printed in India on 29th January 1780 by James Augustus Hicky which under the British Raj. During 1857 the newspapers were owned by the British and the Indians till the British passed the ‘Vernacular Press Act 1876’. The first edition of Times of India was printed in 1861 by Robert Knight.

The Indian newspapers during British rule played an important role in their freedom of struggle under the British. Thereafter there was a number of newspapers that were started by the Indians. The Ghosh brothers started the Amrit Bazaar Patrika in 1868. Many leaders and social reformers started voicing their opinions and contributions through these newspapers. The newspaper The Hindu was started in English language in 1878.
