A democracy is a political system, or a system of decision-making within an institution or organization or a country, in which all members have an equal share of power.[1]Modern democracies are characterized by two capabilities that differentiate them fundamentally from earlier forms of government: the capacity to intervene in their own societies and the recognition of their sovereignty by an international legalistic framework of similarly sovereign states. Democratic government is commonly juxtaposed with oligarchic and monarchic systems, which are ruled by a minority and a sole monarch respectively.

Democracy in its earliest forms is generally associated with the efforts of the ancient Greeks and Romans, who were themselves considered the founders of Western civilization by the 18th century intellectuals who attempted to leverage these early democratic experiments into a new template for post-monarchical political organization.[2]The extent to which these 18th century democratic revivalists succeeded in turning the democratic ideals of the ancient Greeks and Romans into the dominant political institution of the next 300 years is hardly debatable, even if the moral justifications they often employed might be. Nevertheless, the critical historical juncture catalyzed by the resurrection of democratic ideals and institutions fundamentally transformed the ensuing centuries and has dominated the international landscape since the dismantling of the final vestige of empire following the end of the Second World War.

Modern representative democracies attempt to bridge the gulf between the Hobbesian 'state of nature' and the grip of authoritarianism through 'social contracts' that enshrine the rights of the citizens, curtail the power of the state, and grant agency through the right to vote.[3]

During the early times of British Raj there was no democracy and so people had no say in the Governance. However formation of Indian National Congress under democratic principles caught the imagination of the common man. Elsewhere in the British Empire there was call for self government forced the British Parliament to grant Dominion Status to Canada and Australia. in 1935 Government of India Act ushered in formation of legislatures in the provinces [not for areas of Princely States ]. There was an election and Congress won overwhelming majority and formed Ministry. However the power sharing between the Executive Viceroy and absence of Bill of Rights led to collapse of support to the British efforts in the World War II. But the Congress Grew in Stature as a democratically elected party. Its Leaders realized that they represented the true aspirations of the common people. A parallel party Muslim League became the party whose aspirations were to carve out a Muslim nation out of India . The Founding fathers of India were a true believers of Democratic Tradition gave us the Unique Constitution of India and after Independence we became a Republic. Over the time we matured in to a better form of democracy led by eminent Presidents and Prime Ministers , though we had a constitutional Crisis During Emergency. The Supreme Court and the Election Commission and the Free Media has pushed us far ahead as a Supreme Democracy excelling even the US democracy in certain aspects . The Public interest Litigation and Freedom of Information have further strengthened the Democracy. The Democracy In India is alive due to multi party system where even regional party's can live up to the Expectations of electorate in various parts of the country. A series of Coalition Governments in the States and the Center has further strengthened the Roots of the Democracy. though recently a massive mandate was given to single party.

The Electorate is intelligent and is capable of voting out their elected Representatives , if they do not like them

Indian Democracy has really matured and is expected to grow in Stature in the world in future .

Hope it helped
