QUESTION:

Sohan travels at 20 m/s from home to market and returns back home at 25 m/s. Find the average velocity and average speed for the entire journey

ANSWER:

Average velocity = 0

Average speed = 22.22 m/s

GIVEN:

v_1\:(or)\:s_1 = 20 m/s

v_2\:(or)\:s_2 = 25 m/s

TO FIND:

Average velocity and Average speed

FORMULAE:

VELOCITY = DIPLACEMENT ÷ TIME

SPEED = DISTANCE ÷ TIME

TIME = SPEED / DISTANCE

EXPLANATION:

As he reaches back home displacement is zero. Hence average velocity is zero as VELOCITY = DIPLACEMENT ÷ TIME

Avg\:velocity  \:  =  \frac{d  - d}{ \frac{d}{s_1} +  \frac{d}{s_2}  } \\  \\   Avg \: speed \:  =  \frac{0}{d( \frac{1}{20} +  \frac{1}{25} ) }

HENCE AVG VELOCITY = ZERO

SPEED = DISTANCE ÷ TIME

Take distance as d

Avg \: speed \:  =  \frac{d  + d}{ \frac{d}{s_1} +  \frac{d}{s_2}  } \\  \\   Avg \: speed \:  =  \frac{2d}{d( \frac{1}{20} +  \frac{1}{25} ) } \\  \\Take \:L.C.M \:on \:the\: denominator\:\\ \\Avg \: speed \:  =  \frac{2}{( \frac{5 + 4}{100}  ) } \\  \\ Avg \: speed \:  =  \frac{200}{9}  = 22.22 \: m/s

HENCE THE AVG SPEED = 22.22 m/s
