What is Cyber Security?
University of Maryland University College, (2013) defines Cyber Security as protecting networks, computers, programs and data from unintended or unauthorized access, change or destruction.
In the international arena, Cyber Crimes are often regarded as serious threats to the National Security of several countries all across the globe. Terrorism being the worst case, economic and financial violations is the most common exploitations in the current digital era. Considering in this manner, Cyber Security is no less important to Maldives, especially with the rise in the rate of Cyber Crime.
Cyber Crime in Maldives
According to Yoosuf, A. (2012), Police Commissioner of the Maldives – Abdullah Riyaz has noted a 200% increase in the rate of internet related crimes of Cyber Crimes in Maldives.
With reference to an address by the Police Commissioner, at the inauguration ceremony of the “IT Legislation in the Maldives” seminar in Bandos Island Resort last year, Yoosuf, A. (2012) stated that, while only 15 cases of cybercrime were reported in 2010, the figure rose by 200 percent to 41 cases in 2011, as another 61 were reported by then that year.
Yoosuf, A. (2012) goes on to refer Police Commissioner stressing on the importance of a cybercrime law in the Maldives. CP Riyaz further assured that the Police are continuing efforts to combat such crimes in the absence of a law. On that note, Yoosuf, A. (2012) added that a special cybercrime policing department has been created to investigate cybercrime.
