A nutrient is a substance used by an organism to survive, grow, and reproduce. The requirement for dietary nutrient intake applies to animals, plants, fungi, and protists.....

There are two main types of nutrients, macronutrients and micronutrients. The three main categories of macronutrients include carbohydrate, protein, and fat. The two types of micronutrients are vitamins and minerals, and these are extra molecules that cells need to make energy.

A nutrient is a component in foods that an organism uses to survive and grow. Macronutrients provide the bulk energy an organism's metabolic system needs to function while micronutrients provide the necessary co-factors for metabolism to be carried out. Both types of nutrients can be acquired from the environment.

There are seven major classes of nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, fiber, minerals, protein, vitamins, and water.

1. Carbohydrates - our main source of energy.

2. Fats - one source of energy and important in relation to fat soluble vitamins.

3. Roughage (Fiber) - the fibrous indigestible portion of our diet essential to health of the digestive system.

4. Minerals - those inorganic elements occurring in the body and which are critical to its normal functions.

5. Proteins - essential to growth and repair of muscle and other body tissues.

6. Vitamins - water and fat soluble vitamins play important roles in many chemical processes in the body.

7. Water - essential to normal body function - as a vehicle for carrying other nutrients and because 60% of the human body is water without water no human being will survive in the earth.
