Answer:

Soap is long chain potassium and magnesium salts whereas detergent is long chain ammonium and sulphonate salts.

Explanation:

Soap forms an insoluble white precipitate in hard water called scum. However, we can prevent this by using detergents as they can be used in both soft and hard water.

Have a nice day :)

SOAP=

•THEY ARE METAL SALTS OF LONG CHAIN HIGHER FATTY ACID.

•THESE ARE PREPARED FROM VEGETABLES OIL AND ANIMAL FATS.

•THEY CANNOT BE USED EFFECTIVELY IN HARD WATER AS THEY PRODUCT SCUM.. i.e

INSOLUBLE PRECIPITATE OF Ca2+Mg2+Fe2+etc

DETERGENT=

THESE ARE SODIUM SALTS OF LONG CHAIN HYDROCARBON LIKE ALKYL SULPHATE OR ALKYL BENZENE SULPHANATES.

THEY ARE PREPARED FROM HYDROCARBON OF PETROLEUM OR COAL.

THESE DO NOT PRODUCE INSOLUBLE PRECIPITATY IN HARD WATER. THEY ARE EFFECTIVE IN SOFT HARD OR SALT WATER.
