Gravitational force is a fundamental force which tends to pull to bodies towards each other .
the force of attraction is governed by the Newton's law of gravitation

thus

F varies as m1*m2/r²

F=Gm1*m2/r²

this force is independent of the bodies kept in between.

the mechanism is that due to the Mass of the body,nuclei of atoms of one body attract the other.
