A rainbow is caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions. Light enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its component wavelengths or colours. When light exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow

Let's try an activity to get you to understand this instead of mugging it up!

Rainbow Prism

active time: 15 minutes

total time: 15 minutes

One of the easiest and most visually stunning ways to see a rainbow is by using a prism.

Materials

strong sunlight

Tools

glass prism

white cardboard / paper (optional)

adult supervision

Instructions

Place a piece of white paper on the ground under the sunlight.

Put the prism on or above the paper.

Rotate and move the prism around until you see rainbow colours on the paper.

Observation: We see that a rainbow is formed. Since sunlight is white light the light splits into several colours.
