Chubukov first suspected that Lomov had come to borrow money from him as he was being extremely formality in his behaviour. He was also wearing his evening dress making him suspicious. He is not a single bit sincere when he says  he loved Lomov has his own son. This can be proved from his thoughts in which he assumes that Lomov had come to borrow money from him and his determined stand of not lending him any. He just changed his attitude suddenly as he had come to propose a marriage with his daughter Natalya.

Summary:

Chapter: The Proposal

The story starts with the entering of a young man by the name Lomov into the house of Chubukov, a landlord. He requests the landlord's daughter's hand for marriage and the father readily accepts it. When Lomov starts a conversation with Natalya, they end up arguing. Later on, when the argument subsides, another heated one starts. But in this argument,  Lomov succumbs to his palpitation during which Chubukov hands Natalya to Lomov. Natalya continues to be adamant about her views even after Lomov recovers and he is in no condition to give up and the argument keeps on continuing.
