The Federal Government of the United States is the national government of the United States, a federal republic in North America, composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and several island possessions. 

A unitary state is a state governed as a single power in which the central government is ultimately supreme. The central government may create administrative divisions. Such units exercise only the powers that the central government chooses to delegate

Federal government is the one in which the power is shared between the central government as well as the state governments. On the other hand, Unitary government is the one in which all the power is centralized and there is no sharing of power among state governments and the central government.
