the given statement " smith has four daughters , each daughter had a brother"

meaning - smith has four daughter and each had a brother . .

☆ had is a past means which means that in present they do not have brother

answer - so smith have four children I.e. four daughters

In the sentence if we read carefully it is mentioned that " Mr Smith had  4 daughter and each of them had a brother". 

Had is past tense, which means brother died and also the 4 daughter died..

Therefore Mr Smith doesn't have children now.
