Answer:

Explanation:

Depression is a state of mental illness. It is characterised by deep, longlasting feelings of sadness or despair. Depression can change an individual’s

thinking/feelings and also affects his/her social behaviour and sense of

physical well-being. It can affect people of any age group, including young

children and teens. It can run in families and usually starts between the ages

of 15 and 30 years.

Women and elderly people are more commonly affected than men.

There are several types of depression such as major depression it is a

change in mood that lasts for weeks or months. It is one of the most severe

types of depression.

Dysthymia (chronic depression) is a less severe form of depression but

usually lasts for several years.

Psychotic depression a severe form of depression associated with

hallucinations and delusions (feelings that are untrue or unsupported).

Seasonal depression, occuring only at certain time of the year usually winter,

also known as ‘winter blues’.

Causes:

Depression is thought to be caused by an imbalance of certain brain

chemicals called ‘neurotransmitters’ that carries signals in brain which the

body uses to control mood. Some of the common factors that may cause

depression are genetics (hereditary), trauma and high levels of stress, mental

illnesses such as schizophrenia and substance abuse, postpartum depression

(women may develop depression after the birth of the baby), serious medical

conditions such as heart disease, cancer and HIV, use of certain medications,

alcohol and drug abuse, individuals with low self-esteem, trauma and high

levels of stress due to financial problems, breakup of a relationship or loss of

a loved one

I chose the topic because I know many teenagers can relate to this issue .If you hear the world depression in teenagers ,what conclusion can you draw in your mind. Is it important to realize the people about teenagers and depression? Is adult and teenagers depression the same? What are the symptoms of depression? Is it treatable ?To know the answer let's discuss about this issue.

A depressive disorder is a disease that affects mood, thoughts and behaviour. When a bad day turns into a bad week, month or more there may be medical explanation for this change of behaviours and feelings of hopelessness. Expert's estimate 5% of all teenagers suffer from depression. Unfortunately 20% of depressed teens are appropriately diagnosed and treated. The symptoms of depression and bipolar disorder in young people can differ from adults .Symptoms can be missed if you don't know what to look for .Well meaning parents and teachers may think that the young person is moody or unhappy because its a natural part of being young. This is especially for adolescents who are expected to be hormonal. We should treat it by keeping our child happy... We should give our time to the child.
