• Muni takes his flock of goats and goes to the highway to graze them as usual. He sits on a footstool on the base of a calye statue,, and while sitting there he notices a yellow station wagon coming towards him down the highway A white man exits the car and asks Muni in English if a station is in the vicinit, as the car runs out of gas and comes to a halt on the road in front of the statue.
• However, because he doesn't speak English and the foreigner doesn't speak Tamil, Muni couldn't talk to him. The foreigner tells Muni he's a New York coffee dealer is interested and wants to buy the statue.
• He offers Muni money to buy the statute assuming it belongs to him. Initially Muni mistakes him for a police officer, because he is dressed in khaki, he doesn't understand what the stranger wants. He concluded instinctively that the foreigner  was either a police officer or a soldier.
• Khaki was in Muni a uniform of a figure of authority. His assumptions were obviously mistaken, but Muni didn't know. Muni became very careful when the American offered a cigarette and his card. He assumed that the stranger tried to bribe him for some murder details.  
• Accordingly, someone at the border of Kritam and Kuppam was mutilated and tossed under a tamarind tree just a few weeks earlier. Muni assumed that the American was some kind of authority figure who Is investigating the case.
• Fearing that he could get involved in the crime, Muni wanted to aplacate the American (although he was innocent). The findings were was hilarious, with neither Muni nor the American understanding each other's spoken words
