Now, for  2+2=7 , we’re definitely not working in the normal number system. But let’s suppose we’re working in some ring with unity. Why?

Well, in a ring, we have a binary operation that’s usually denoted by  + . And while there are other structures that have such an operation, they are either specific cases of rings, something relatively unusual (such as a wheel), or an Abelian group. But in an Abelian group, we don’t have a " 1 ", which we need for the symbols  2  and  7  to have a natural meaning (  2  is the multiplicative identity of the ring added to itself, and  7  is similarly the multiplicative identity of the ring added together  7  times. In particular, whatever structure we’re working with needs both a multiplicative and and additive identity, and rings are more-or-less the most general structure that does this).

So assuming we’re in a ring,  2+2=7  gives us  0=3  (in a ring, we can add  −4  to both sides). Now, this means that if we add the multiplicative identity to itself 3 times, we get back to  0 . (As a side note, the smallest number of times you can add a multiplicative identity to itself before you get  0  is called the characteristic of a ring; this ring must have characteristic  3  unless it’s the trivial ring, where everything is  0 . For example,  Z/3Z , the integers mod  3 , is a ring with characteristic  3 .)

So, we then know that  1=  1+0+0=1+3+3=7 . So  7+7  is really just  1+1  in our ring, which is  2 .
