Fossils can index strata as many are restricted to relatively thin layers of sedimentary rock strata. Attempts to determine the maximum thickness of sedimentary rock strata (in Europe) were attempted in the mid 19th century. The average time it took to deposit a given thickness of different types of sediments like lime-muds (limestone), sand (sandstone) etc.; with the realization that long (missing) time intervals were also represented by bedding planes (layers between strata) and unconformities. The maximum thickness of such strata multiplied by the average rates of deposition of various strata types would give a minimum age of the earth. When the time estimated for unconformities and bedding planes and other missing strata was considered, a date of 2.5 Billion years was estimated. This was way before absolute geologic age dates were determined by radiometric age dating known as geochronology. Any sequence of strata represents an increment of geologic time and in some parts of the planet, sedimentary rocks can be many miles in thickness.
