Metallic character decreases across a period and increases down the group.
I f you look at the periodic table, all the non metals are on the right hand side of the table.
Nuclear charge increases across a period.
Therefore it easier to gain electrons.

It decreases frm left to rigjt as tendoncy to loose electrons increases due to incrsase in Atomic size....
