The revolt broke out because on 29 march 1857 a young soldier named mangal pandey was hanged to death for attacking his officers at barrackpore as they were forcing him to use new cartridges which were suspected of being coated with the fat of cows and pigs. Enraged by this act of britishers the rebellion began in meerut on 10 may 1857, when the public and soldiers of meerut openly revolted against the british. The whole city echoed with slogans like 'maro firangi ko'. Soldiers broke the gates of jails and released their companions. They then marched to delhi.
