The Tenth Schedule — popularly known as the Anti-Defection Act — was included in the Constitution in 1985 by the Rajiv Gandhi ministry and sets the provisions for disqualification of elected members on the grounds of defection to another political party

The anti defection law has been very helpful for the Indian political landscape.

The bill was passed during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi being the Prime Minister of India and lays down clearly that only when two-third members of a political party are in sync, then only they can move to another political party or merge their own political party into another one.

It has helped to bring defections considerably down thereby helping in making stable governments in the states as well as the center.

Earlier, without the law, many parliamentarians and legislators could easily win from one party and go to another party after winning thereby diluting the people's mandate.

The political parties can also stay assured as their members can't just desert them at will.
