Alleles are the alternative form of a gene present on homologous chromosomes. They occupy the same position on a chromosome and affecting the same characteristic but in alternative ways. For example- Tallness is a characteristic feature of a plant, control by a particular gene. This gene has two allelic forms- 'T'(DOMINANT) & 't'(RECESSIVE). The expression of these allelic forms either in homozygous or heterozygous condition determines the phenotype & genotype of plant. As we know that plant is tall, it shows that (T) has expressed itself either in (TT) or(Tt) condition. In case of dwarf plant, dwarfness is due to expression of same gene but different allelic form (t) & only in recessive condition (tt).
