Clouds are classified according to a system in which the name of the cloud is determined by their appearance.
According to this rule there are four main types of cloud namely cumulus, stratus, cirrus and nimbus.
Clouds may also be classified on the basis of their height namely low, medium and high.
For instance clouds which are situated at medium level bear a prefix such as "alto" and those situated at high level has the prefix "cirr-".
