Coal is found by excavating the surface of the earth by mining and quarrying whereas petroleum or rock oil is obtained by drilling.

They are distributed underground as they are fossil fuels and are formed from the remains of dead plants and animals that have died millions of years ago and has underwent extreme pressure under the earth’s surface.
