Population is the basis of allocation of seats of the Lok Sabha. As far as possible, every State gets representation in the Lok Sabha in proportion to its population as per 2001 census figures. There are 543 Parliamentary constituencies in India each electing one member.
In a SC reserved constituency only someone who belongs to the Scheduled Castes can stand for election. Currently, in the Lok Sabha, 79 seats are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and 41 for the Scheduled Tribes. This number is in proportion to their share in the total population.
