Astronomer Edwin Hubbleclassified galaxies into four major types: spiral, barred spiral, elliptical and irregular. Most of the nearby, bright galaxies are spirals, barred spirals or ellipticals. Spiral galaxies have a bulge at the center and a flattened disk containing spiral arms.
