Answer:

Living organisms directly or indirectly are dependent on soil. Thus, ultimately all living organisms are dependent on the soil. It is not true to say that organisms that live in water are totally independent of soil as a resource. Organisms living in water depend on green plants for materials and energy.

Living organism are dependent on the soil in the following ways:

  • Soil plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle which is the main source of recycling of nutrients from the atmosphere to soil and then to water.

  • All plants (even aquatic) , on which almost all the organism depend directly or indirectly for food, growing in the soil, which provides them with nutrients and water for development.

  • Soil also supports the very existence of forest, which provide us wood, building material, fibre, medicinal plants. Forests are also a natural habitat for a number of animal species.

  • A number of of insects and animals make their homes in the soil.
