Lungs are designed in such a way that they are lined by a thin membrane to facilitate the exchange of gases. ... In the lungs the bronchioles terminate in balloon like structure called alveoli.the alveoli contains network of blood cappilaries that increase the surface area for exchange of gases.

The air from the atmosphere reaches the lung by travelling thru nose, trachea n bronchi. Ther r two bronchi going into d two lungs. These bronchi r further divided into many smalls bronchioles. The bronchioles end with a round balloon lyk structure called alveoli. Here the exchange of gases takes place. The alveoli are connected with millions of arteries n veins. The alveoli being spherical in shape require less volume but have more surface area hence increasing the area of exchange of gases.

Hope dis helps.
