How are mayriarchal families different from partriarchal families?

The main difference seems to bebetween Patriarchal societies (where power resides with men) andMatriarchal (where power resides with women). Almost all Judeo/Christian societies are patriarchal, where as many primitive cultures areMatriarchal.
