Minerals can be defined as 'a solid, naturally occurring inorganic substance'. Minerals are not man-made. They occur naturally. These are solid chemical compounds. Some examples of minerals are- sulphur, quartz, etc.

Most of the minerals are formed in extreme conditions. Like extreme heat or cold. Temperature and pressure are the most common ways minerals are formed. For example- some minerals are formed in the extreme heat of lava and magma. When magma and lava cools down there are several minerals formed during and after eruption.

There are several sources of minerals. Some of them are listed below

  • VOLCANIC ERUPTION- Volcanic eruption is one of the most common ways of mineral formation. When a volcano erupts and lava comes out of it, there are many different types of minerals that are carried out of earth along with it. When the magma and lava cools down, minerals are formed.
  • SURFACE WATER- Water is also a very common way of mineral formation. Water has elements in it like any other substance. Now, when there is a particular element that creates a solution and has properties other than what water originally had, minerals are formed. Also water is an excellent way of bringing minerals by dissolving them in itself from remote places. Often we see banks and riverbeds that are very rich and fertile. This is due to the minerals. Water dissolves the minerals in itself and washes up against the bank. Overtime, there is a thick layer of minerals formed that can be used for various purposes.
  • UNDERGROUND WATER- Underground water is an excellent source of minerals. In the depths of earth there are various rich minerals, that dissolves in the underground water and effects its quality. That is why underground water is known for its good quality since it has so many minerals in it.
