There are three types of solutions that can occur in your body based on solute concentration:
⋙ Isotonic
⋙ Hypotonic
⋙ Hypertonic.
- Isotonic solutions contain equal concentrations of impermeable solutes on either side of the membrane and so the cell neither swells nor shrinks.
- A hypotonic solution has a low solute concentration than the inside of the cells (solute concentration in the cell is high). Osmotic forces then cause water from a solution to enter the cells. The cell eventually stretches and bursts in the process becoming lysis.
- A hypertonic solution contains a higher concentration of solutes compared to another solution. The opposite solution with a lower concentration is known as the hypotonic solution.
