Prime minister of India is appointed by The President of India. In India we have Parliamentary form of Government. ( The president is DeJure head of State whereas PM is DeFacto head of the state).
We have General Elections for Lower house of Parliament (Lok Sabha) in every 5 years.
The majority party chooses his leader .. And The President Of India appoints him/her as the Prime Minister of India.
