When iron reacts with water, it forms ferric oxide instead of ferric hydroxide. Thus (Fe3O4) and H2 gas is liberated.

When a metal reacts with water ,it forms metal oxide and evolves hydrogen gas.
here, Fe(iron) is a metal and when it reacts with water it forms Ferrous Ferric oxide and hydrogen gas is evolved.
We can understand it more clearly if we balance the equation.
Hope it helps.
