So in the poem 'rime of the ancient mariner' the captain and the sailors were at sea for days, traveling through fog and mist, implying that were moving closer to the poles which are cold. The lines in the poem describe how solitary and lonely these waters were. The sailors thought there was no life but the albatross that flew by told them otherwise. The felt hopeful because if this bird was out, flying over the sea, then life and land will definitely be somewhere close by. So the albatross revived their hope.
