Actually it is petroleum jelly..Vaseline is the name of the company.
The petroleum jelly is a mix oil and wax .It is a by-product of petroleum refining and is not considered as eco- friendly.

The crude oil extracted from under the Earth is taken to oil refineries or you can say petroleum refineries to be processed to get useful products.
In a oil refinery, the crude oil is divided into fractions in the fractionating column to carry out fractional distillation of petroleum. All the components of crude oil have different boiling and melting points. So at the top of the fractionating column the products of petroleum that have lower boiling points vaporize and separate out...As we go down, products that have comparatively higher boiling points are extracted....

So we can say that , at different heights of the fractionating column, different products  and chemicals are extracted....

Petroleum gas has low boiling point, so it is the first product to separate out and all the lubricating oils like grease, tar, asphalt, paraffin wax are the last to separate...The end residue is called bitumen

The by-product that is obtained petroleum jelly..Alongwith it soap, linoleum is also obtained as secondary product..
