When we water the plants all the nutrients and minirals R absorbed by soil and roots take all the minirals and nutrients from the soil. With the help of xylem vessel or step these nutrients and minirals R transformed in all parts of plant .

water and minerals are transported to plants by xylem
xylem can transport water only through upward direction it cannot come downward in direction.
on the other hand phloem helps to transport food in plants.
phloem can transport food through both upward and downward direction
