It was annexed by British on the grounds that awadh was not adminstered well. Awadh's emperor was Wajid Ali shah

Awadh was annexed by British under doctrine of lapse i.e the states having no dependent had to give it's governorship to the East India Company.
They annexed Awadh by saying that this would free it's people from misrule and misgovernance.
