To administer and conquer India, East India Company took all necessary steps in the form of data, survey and mapping to use it to their benefit.
In the 18th and 19th century, as more and more territories fell under the British rule, mapping exercises became a routine to demarcate Indian regions.
It was to help them realize revenues and understanding the characteristics of a particular region so that they could use it to conquer that area.
Bengal Atlas and Map of Hindoostan by James Rennell in 1780’s serve as examples.
