In this article, the effect of the three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial) on social cohesion is explored. In addition, this article also explores the dyadic relationship between government and the other pillars of society. Finally, the role of national symbols, mottoes, pledges, and language on social cohesion is addressed. Examples from both "cohesive" and "balkanized" societies are explored.
