rules for changing direct speech into indirect:

1. we use a linker before the indirect speech.

example: he said,"I am busy".

he said that he was busy.

2. the pronouns are changed according to sense.

example: Roma said,"I do not like milk in my tea". ans: Roma said that she does not like milk in her tea.

3. if the reporting verb is in the past tense we must make the following changes.

changes of tense

1. present indefinite becomes past indefinite.
2. present continuous becomes past continuous.
3. past indefinite, present perfect and past perfect becomes past perfect.
4. past continuous becomes past perfect continuous.
5. future (shall/will) becomes future (should/would)

change in time and place expressions in past tense

1. now becomes then
2. ago becomes beforebefore
3. today becomes that day
4. to night becomes that night
5. tomorrow becomes the next day
6. yesterday becomes the previous day
7. last night becomes the previous night
8. here becomes there
9. hence becomes thense
