The leaves, stem and branches contain abundant resin canals that carry the resin. This resin is protective, it seeps from wounds and quickly seal them, trapping and killing any parasites in the wound, and discouraging animals from eating the leaves. These resins and oils give woods a distinctive and very pleasant aroma.
