Sikkim adopts planned approach to promote Tourism

In 2011 the state recorded 14,24,965 footfall. It is committed to encouaraging more visitors, but in a planned way. Tourism, Sikkim has realised, provides employment to the people.

Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has said, ‘A planned approach for development of the sector is envisaged (in the form of policy) for the future, spreading benefits to the community while also safeguarding our fragile ecosystem.’

He has made the State Tourism Policy-18 (STP) public.

Now the Inter-departmental Coordination Committee, mandatory in keeping with the National Tourism Policy, will soon be formed for implementing the STP.

State Tourism Secretary C P Dhakal told UNI, ‘Neighbouring countries like Nepal are also promoting tourism to boost their economy. We are focusing on Adventure, Wellness and Religious Tourism. The government is committed towards this and infrastructural development has also taken place to some extent.'
